Additional Beethoven's Last Night Information

Trans-Siberian Orchestra's first two recordings, a pair of late-'90s Christmas albums, hinted that some day TSO might evolve into a latter-day ELO or even an ELP. Instead, this overwrought concept album shares more common ground with ALW (Andrew Lloyd Webber) or Meat Loaf. TSO, in fact, aims to retrace a path once traveled by producer Jim Steinman, the mastermind behind the theatrical, over-the-top rock opuses that briefly transformed Mr. Loaf and Bonnie Tyler ("Total Eclipse of the Heart") into mass-audience favorites. TSO ringmaster Paul O'Neill (once a guitarist in Broadway productions of Jesus Christ Superstar and Hair) here ditches the holiday themes and instead scores a simple-minded fairy tale (whose text spans a 32-page CD booklet) that involves Beethoven's soul, the devil, and an imaginary Symphony No. 10. Too often, the music is the servant of the project's thin plot, and the rock-classical instrumental bravura that initially attracted public attention to TSO (at times, the group sounds like a symphonic Boston) is obscured by overheated vocal rantings. Meanwhile, the guitar-driven rendering of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony ("Requiem") is mundane. Yet, one vocal track, "After the Fall" with singer Patti Russo, jumps off the record as a Tyler-esque knockout, raging with emotion and melodic luster. It doesn't save the album, but it helps. --Terry Wood

What Customers Say About Beethoven's Last Night:

The vocals remind me a little of Tim Burton's Rocky Horror: From Concept to Cult, but the resemblence ends there.I also found my two and four year old granddaughters loved the CD which led to some educational classical music moments. I just discovered this CD a few weeks ago. I recommend this CD highly if you are into Rock Operas or if you like TSO. We were able to introduce them to Beethoven's Fifth since they loved the part of this rock opera that has the chords. What a wonderful discovery, I feel like I've died and gone to heaven with the joy of this rock opera.Personally I thought the music, instrumentation, vocals, and 'story' all came together perfectly. The fictional story of Beethoven's last night on earth after finishing his Symphony number ten is presented as a rock opera.

Patty Russo is one of the singers on this album and she has one beautiful voice and belts out, as do the others, her songs. So I checked out the website and read the biography and my curiosity went even higher. They have taken Beethoven's last night and brought to light the struggle he had between good and evil, although it might be fictional. Granted I have never heard of any of the people involved with TSO.

There have been some great concept albums, albums that have told stories, and rock opera albums. I was left speechless and blown away by this beautiful recording. If you think The Who's Tommy or Quadraphenia were brilliant or the Moody Blues Core 7 albums were brilliant or even Pink Floyd's DSOTM, Jeff Wayne's War Of The Worlds were brilliant, then you are in for a massive treat with Beethoven's Last Night. This is the brilliant of the brilliant. I never heard of Trans Siberian Orchestra until about a month ago. In a Moody Blues group I'm in we were disgussing various types of music and TSO came into the subject. Beethoven's Last Night left me speechless. The story behind this album is interesting although a bit sad.

TSO has taken Beethoven's and Mozart's music and have put a rock flavor into it that is unbeatable. I firmly believe that TSO would be crazy not to take this beautiful masterpiece and transform it into a broadway or West End musical. You definately will not be disappointed and will be most overjoyed at the brilliance of this recording. Whether you like classical music, of which this is only part, or not this CD is a must for anyone. I was totally blown away by the intensity of the music in this recording. It deserves it and I'm sure it would be a massive hit.

I was told about TSO and their music and was given a link for their website. Although Beethoven's 10th Symphony is quite controversial, TSO makes it sound as pure fact and real as if there was a real 10th Symphony. I've heard classical music played in different ways and loved some of it such as Isao Tomita's synthesized versions. So I decided to order Beethoven's Last Night and even had it shipped priority international mail. I'm not much into Beethoven or Mozart.

IT IS SUNG TWICE ON THE ALBUM. I PURCHASED EVERYONE OF THEIR CDS SINCE AND HAVE BEEN THRILLED WITH EACH AND EVERY ONE. THIS CD BY TSO REMINDS ME OF HOW CLASSIC MUSIC CAN BE APPRECIATED BY EVERY CLASSICAL AND ROCK CONNISEUR OUT THERE. MOSTLY EVERY TYPE OUT THERE.VERY FEW EXCEPTIONS.

IF YOU WANT TO BE ROCKED RIGHT OUT OF YOUR SEAT YOU NEED TO BUY THIS CD. I HOPE TO SEE AND HEAR THEM IN PERSON SOMEDAY SOON. MY FAVORITE PIECE FROM THIS CD IS THE HEART WRENCHING SOLO CALLED THE DREAMS OF CANDLELIGHT. I HAVE PLAYED IT OVER AND OVER AND NEVER GROW TIRED OF IT.

YEARS AGO I PURCHASED VANILLA FUDGE ALBUMS THEY DID CLASSIC MUSIC TO ROCK ALSO. THANKS TSO. I JUST DISCOVERED TSO JUST LAST YEAR AND AM SORRY IT WASNT SOONER. I LOVE MUSIC.

I am a classically-trained pianist. The more you listen, the deeper you become involved in the music arrangements, taking in new dimensions each time. This album shows how classical music can transcend into today's rock, but still keep the classical quality true to form.

The love for this album can be enjoyed by all generations. Beethoven's Last Night is superior, brilliant and beautiful. Unless you're looking for "Rap", this album has something for everyone.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra has taken classical music from Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and other composers and put a rock twist into it all. My children who have lived only through the late 1990's and beyond jam out to this with me in the home and car. Enjoy and become entranced.

I question what musical background Terry Wood (editorial review) possesses. I have listened intensely to all kinds of music throughout my life (70's, 80's, and beyond), and Beethoven's Last Night emcompasses everything I love in music.

I am waiting for the next one with bated breath. Even though it's still good stuff, it's not as good as TSO's other three albums.
